DON B. CHAE, A PEOPLE'S JUDGE
I am proud I am often called “a people's lawyer” or “a people's judge.”
As a lawyer, I was always a defender of the rights and interest of the weak and the poor, especially including those of Asian-Americans and immigrants. I devoted myself to the protection of the people's human and civil rights, endeavored to improve the conditions of the community, handled many cases pro bono or at greatly reduced rates. I was not only a civic and political activist in community affairs, but also as a church elder I was a leader in moral and religious matters.
When I was chosen as a judge of the Dallas municipal court, the history of my community service was a big factor, in addition to my knowledge of the law and my diverse experience. The city of Dallas must have considered that I could contribute to making the city of Dallas “diverse, vibrant, and progressive,” which is the official motto of the city.
On the bench, I am known as a judge not only for my diligence in judicial work, but more for my wisdom and judicial temperament. The parties in my courtroom are invariably satisfied with my fairness, impartiality, and compassion. A judge's objective is to find the truth and dispense justice. I strive to come to the truth and justice by way of fairness, wisdom, and mercy. Even when a defendant is convicted in my courtroom, I see to it that the defendant has no grudge, he being satisfied with my fair and courteous courtroom proceedings.
In a criminal case, I recognize the state has a duty to maintain law and order, protect the people's life, liberty, and property, and punish the evil and the wicked. But always do I conscientiously safeguard the defendant's Constitutional rights to a fair and impartial trial and other procedural rights. In my courtroom I always do my best to be just, fair, and decisive, at the same time being humble, patient, and compassionate as God commanded the judges to be.
VOTE AND ELECT DON B. CHAE, A PEOPLE's JUDGE.
